This program is designed to prepare competent individuals for a challenging career in health care. The licensed practical nurse is a vital member of the health care team and functions in a variety of health care settings. The state licensure examination follows graduation. This program is approved by the Florida Board of Nursing. Students complete clinical hours in participating healthcare facilities in the community.

 

  • Practical Nursing Applicants are highly encouraged to score at least a 60% or better on the TEAS Test. Applicants who score a 60% or more will be given priority in the selection process.

    3. Practical Nursing applicants may schedule to take the TEAS test at the following ATI website. Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) measures basic essential skills in the academic content area domains of Reading, Mathematics, Science, and English and Language usage.

  • Minimum 18 years of age when the program begins

    • Proof of high school graduation or higher education. Document(s) accepted:
    • Official U.S. High School transcript or GED-this is required regardless of other transcripts
    • Official Associate’s or Bachelor’s transcript (If applicable)
    • Foreign transcript evaluation of high school graduation or higher education
    • Background Check and Drug Screening Clearance (upon acceptance)
    • All Clinical Requirements Completed
    • Successful completion of the TEAS exam based on the criteria found on the timeline checklist.

  • Standards

     

    After successfully completing this program, the student will be able to perform the following:

     

    1. Demonstrate knowledge of the healthcare delivery system and health occupations.
    2. Recognize and practice safety, security and emergency procedures.
    3. Demonstrate knowledge of blood borne diseases, including HIV/AIDS.
    4. Perform patient and personal care as it pertains to the practical nurse.
    5. Provide patient-centered care for the geriatric population.
    6. Assist with restorative (rehabilitative) activities.
    7. Demonstrate organizational functions, following the patient plan of care.
    8. Demonstrate computer literacy as related to nursing functions.
    9. Use appropriate verbal and written communications in the performance of nursing functions.
    10. Demonstrate legal and ethical responsibilities specific to the nursing profession.
    11. Apply the principles of infection control, utilizing nursing principles.
    12. Perform aseptic and sterile techniques.
    13. Describe the structure and function of the human body in relation to health and disease.
    14. Apply principles of nutrition as it relates to Practical Nursing Scope of Practice.
    15. Describe human growth and development across the lifespan.
    16. Demonstrate the performance of nursing procedures.
    17. Demonstrate how to administer medication.
    18. Demonstrate how to provide bio-psycho-social support.
    19. Demonstrate healthy lifestyle responsibility specific to personal health maintenance.
    20. Implement education and resources for family wellness.
    21. Participate in Community Health Awareness Forums.
    22. Demonstrate how to care for the surgical patient with a Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Lymphatic, Musculoskeletal, Endocrine or Integumentary disease/disorder.
    23. Demonstrate how to care for pre-operative and post-operative patients, utilizing nursing principles.
    24. Demonstrate how to care for the surgical patient with a Gastrointestinal, Neurological, Urinary, Reproductive or Oncologic disease/disorder.
    25. Demonstrate how to care for maternal/newborn patients, utilizing nursing principles.
    26. Demonstrate knowledge of SIDS/SUIDS as it relates to the practical nursing role.
    27. Demonstrate how to care for pediatric patients, utilizing nursing principles.
    28. Develop transitional skills.
    29. Demonstrate employability skills specific to practical nursing.

     

    LPN/IV Therapy: The following outcomes can only be taken by practical nurses who have graduated from their practical nursing program.  The LPN/IV education must be sponsored by a provider of continuing education courses approved by the Board of Nursing pursuant to Rule 64B9, F.A.C. To be qualified to teach this module, the instructor must be a currently Florida licensed Registered Nurse with teaching experience and nursing experience which includes IV therapy.  The provider will be responsible for issuing a certificate verifying the requisite number of hours and course content.

     

    In accordance with Rule 64B9-12.005, F.A.C., the module cannot be less than 30 hours post-graduate level.  These outcomes must be followed by supervised clinical practice as needed to demonstrate clinical competence.  Verification of competence shall be the responsibility of each employing institution.  Such verification shall be given through a signed statement from a Florida licensed registered nurse.

     

    LPN/IV Therapy:

    1. Explain the legal aspects of IV administration by practical nurses to include the policies and procedures of the institution and appropriate documentation.
    2. Demonstrate knowledge of the peripheral veins used for venipuncture.
    3. Perform a venipuncture.
    4. Discuss the effect of IV therapy on the body.
    5. Recognize and respond to adverse reactions to IV therapy.
    6. Recognize and use various types of IV equipment.
    7. Administer drugs intravenously.
    8. Care for patients receiving IV drug therapy, blood and blood components and/or parenteral nutrition.
    9. Describe and utilize the principles of infection control in IV therapy.
    10. Manage special IV therapy procedures.
    11. Recognize terminology pertinent to IV therapy.
    12. Care for the patient receiving IV therapy via central lines.

  • Student Selection Criteria: 

  • Applicants who have attended, but not completed, another practical nursing program must provide a letter of good standing from the Director of the School of Nursing (or designee) that addresses the following: potential for success in a PN program, safety in providing nursing care, interpersonal communication skills, and other information the director deems important.
